Southern Saint
Line Sisters are THE best. Period.
I was brunching with my girls, celebrating my birthday, feeling festive. In the spirit of another year older, I tried something new – a Southern Saint. A bourbon (of course) cocktail with Chambord Liqueur, Fernet-Branca, lemon juice and a few other pours of deliciousness.
I have raspberry liqueur in the round bottle in my liqueur cabinet. The cabinet, not the bar, cause my hand hasn’t reached for it in forever. At some point in my life, I made non-bourbon cocktails with Chambord; but honestly, I can’t even remember what they were. The bottle has been taunting me to create a bourbon cocktail with it. So literally, when I saw it in the ingredient list, I was intrigued. 😉 Next came Fernet-Branca - I’ve seen it. I don’t believe I’ve had it before. It’s herbaceous. Hmmm, this could be interesting.
First sip, I didn’t love it. It’s a pretty pink’ish hue thanks to the Chambord. I was expecting sweet even though I knew there was an herbal component. Second sip, I started to appreciate the complexity. The Fernet-Branca and lemon juice balance out the Chambord. There is complexity and it is decidedly well balanced. Yup, this could become my jam! By my third sip, I was signaling to the bartender that I wanted another when this was finished. Now I need to figure out how to recreate this complex goodness. Stay tuned, I’m going to my lab to get busy.
Cheers!
