Smokey Old Fashioned

I was at dinner recently back home and saw a Smokey Old Fashioned on the menu! I know smoking cocktails was the rage for a bit; but I don’t think I’ve ever had one. It was a classic, made with @WoodfordReserve, so I knew I would be able to discern if the smoking element to the cocktail for me.

As the server approached the table, I ooh’d and aah’d. The presentation was beautiful. The drink arrived as pictured with a lot of smoke. I didn’t immediately remove the top glass, which served as a cloche, because I liked the way it looked.

But really, there is only so much staring I’m going to do with my cocktail; it was time to taste. My first sip was meh. I tasted a lot of smoke. That’s it. Liquid smoke. My second sip wasn’t much better. Maybe I needed to let it breathe a bit, get some air into the glass. I let it sit for a few minutes – more than a few; but we’ll go with it. Nope, it still tasted like smoke. ☹

Public Service Announcement

  1. It doesn’t matter how pretty the cocktail, if it isn’t balanced it’s trash. Harsh? Yes, but true. This one started and finished with one ingredient - smoke.

  2. A little smoke goes a long way. The cocktail could have been delicious if it had a kiss of smoke - like expressing citrus oil as a finishing touch to a cocktail.

 Until the next adventure,
