Chocolate Old Fashioned

Fall has arrived! Crisp mornings. Low humidity. Nature is changing her palette slowly but surely. I am here for it.

I’m slowly starting to eat out again. Not often, but 18 months and counting, I’m tired of figuring out every meal and quite frankly tired of my own food. I went out to a popular steak house and they had a Chocolate Old Fashioned! Another bonus for the fall season is bourbon cocktails abound. Silly restaurants only think bourbon is a fall/winter drink.

Two of my favorite things – bourbon and chocolate. I had to order it. It had my name written all over that lowball. I was intrigued by the tiramisu liqueur which I didn’t know was a thing. The cocktail used spiced chocolate bitters, well alright, now.

Let me say, first sip was meh. I was thinking the drink was going to be very sweet, it was the opposite. I asked for an additional splash of the tiramisu to see if it would balance the drink. It helped. Then it hit me – I’m a one fork tiramisu kind of girl. I never eat the whole thing. It is one of the few desserts I rarely finish. What also dawned on me as I was trying to figure out why this wasn’t wow’ing me - the chocolate bitters. I’ve been down this road before with chocolate bitters before and it never seems to end well. NEVER.

Lesson from this, that I really, REALLY hope I retain – this time that is – if I don’t like the ingredients outside of the cocktail; I likely won’t like them with bourbon. Deep sigh. I should know this. It’s a concept in cooking that everyone knows.

Do you disagree?
