Apple Picking or Free Labor for Cocktails

Cameron.jpg

I’ve been trying to find a weekend to take the young prince apple picking and finally found one. He loved it. I loved it. My sister loved it. And my mother loved it too. Yes it was a family affair. After 365 years of COVID-19; we needed to get out, enjoy some fresh air and burn off some of this boy energy. It’s a thing and it is real.

After apple picking we went to the pumpkin patch. Mission accomplished - energy burned.

What to do with all these apples? I knew my mother was going to make Apple Brown Betty for dessert – it was delic; but wasn’t sure what to do with the other apples.

SHRUB!

I made this delicious apple shrub in about 48 hours. It was easy and delicious. I then decided to riff on the recipe and made a pomegranate shrub – equally delicious. I made the juice from fresh pomegranates. While it is good; I’m going to try it with @Pom juice. It may be faster and certainly cheaper than buying fresh.

I’ve added my shrubs to hot tea, seltzer water and of course bourbon. For my cocktail, I used equal parts apple shrub with bourbon. For the pomegranate, I would recommend a 2 to 1 ration – two fingers of bourbon to one finger of pomegranate syrup. I used @WoodfordReserve – yummy. I find Woodford is great for cocktails, isn’t a bold bourbon and plays nice with others.
