Whistlepig Piggyback Rye

I have a friend who has been trying to get me to taste WhistlePig 15 for ages. Pre Covid, I would have ordered glass, neat, to try. During Covid, I’m not interested in spending that price point $XXX on an unknown pour.

I did enter the Whistle Pig universe with their Piggyback Rye. Aged 6 years, it is a medium light amber color and coming in at a precise 96.56 proof; this pour is tasty.

The nose: I immediately pick up pepper and baking spices. Weird combo, but it works. I kept smelling before I had my first sip. It really is lovely.

The palate: the spiciness of the rye is forward. It hit my tongue as a higher proof rye does; but it didn’t overwhelm. It has a bigger mouth feel than the 96 proof would indicate. I didn’t get the pepper like I did on the nose; but it is good.

The finish: This has a long finish. I know I’m drinking a rye. Baking spices made an appearance on the finish and maybe some caramel or perhaps vanilla.

Final verdict: delicious. This is good. I can’t wait to make cocktails with this and try the 10 year.

Cheers,
