Spiced Old Fashioned

As I taste my way through St. Louis, I stopped at a taphouse for happy hour with co-workers. Typical taphouse fare; a lot of beer, decent selection of wine but the cocktail selection was passable at best. There were a few rum based cocktails and only one bourbon cocktail. The Spice Old Fashioned sounded promising. My skepticism grew as I looked at the ingredients; a typical Old Fashioned with house infused cinnamon whiskey. Hmm, I was expecting more than one spice – silly me.

The first sip was tasty. Strong punch of cinnamon. The more I drank it though, the cinnamon overwhelmed the drink, and I didn’t love it. Because it is house infused, I’m sure no two batches are quite the same. I would suggest a lighter touch with the cinnamon. Don’t get me wrong, this tasted much better than the popular cinnamon whiskey on the shelf; but in an Old Fashioned the balance was thrown off. I’m not sure if adding more simple syrup would have made it better or even using a sugar cube to balance out the ‘spice’. I might consider trying this again; but alas, my time in St. Louis is winding down and there is too much good food to go back and try again.

 Until the next adventure
