Old Forester 1897

New Year. New bourbon.

Happy New Year. 2022 ended with a whimper, recovering from COVID. Thankfully my symptoms were mild. Vaccination and boosters made that a reality. I believe in science… but I digress. I was unable to host my annual Christmas Eve Dinner which is always a lot of fun and a highlight of the season for me and the young prince.

I must say 2023 is off to a great start!  Good things are happening, and I receive ALL of the blessings.

I randomly went into the liquor store to see what was on the shelves. I’ve been trying to drink down some of my bar before picking up random bottles; but it’s been a minute and I wanted to see what’s new. 😉 Now if you’ve been with me on this bourbon journey, you know I tend to like lower proof bourbons, the BIG pours overwhelm me if I’m drinking them neat. There are a few I like; but Basil Hayden is my #1 favorite and that’s 80 proof.

As I was walking around in circles taking all of the bourbon bottles on the shelf, I kept coming back to Old Forester 1897 BIB. I can’t say it was the label that drew me in or even the brand. Whatever cosmic being directing me that night – THANK YOU.

This bottle is EVERY.THING. It is delicious.

Eyes: Dark amber in color.

Nose: Vanilla and caramel. Though a lot more caramel. I smell spices – clove, maybe.

Mouth: The caramel comes through and some baking spices. The vanilla doesn’t come through in the taste and I’m not missing it, at all. This is very sweet. @100 proof this is an easy sipper. I mean so good that it sneaks up.

Final verdict: There will always be a bottle of this on my bar. It is that tasty. I also won’t be using this for cocktails, so if you come over; expect to taste this neat. And you only get one pour. Ha!

Let me know what you’ve tried and loved.

Cheers,
