Woodford Reserve Spiced Cherry Bitters

Number 3 of my 5 pack of Woodford Reserve bitters is Spiced Cherry.

Spiced Manhattan, yes!

When I saw this one in the box, I knew I was going to like/love it. For my first drink, I added a few dashes to my neat bourbon. Ummm, kinda not feeling it. At. ALL. I mean it smells great but the taste through off my bourbon - drats I don’t know if I added too much to my bourbon, which is a real possibility. I have a heavy hand and I never measure things. I make drinks like I cook – to taste. So under the guise that perhaps my ratio was off, I added more bourbon – for scientific purposes, of course 😉 Still not feeling it. What in the world?!

I added ice to my very strong cocktail. The ice mellowed out the bitters a tad and the taste was palatable. I finished my drink, tipsy due to the extra bourbon but not really satisfied. I called it a night, annoyed that my cocktail was unsatisfactory.

I wasn’t ready to give up on the spiced cherry bitters yet so I vowed to look for a cocktail recipe where I could incorporate them. I may have struck silver, cause really gold is a high standard and have you seen the price of gold lately? Hmpf. Anyhoots, I made a Manhattan and added a few dashes. Well now, ok! I love a Manhattan and the spiced cherry bitters added another flavor layer to the cocktail, and I think I like it.

Hmmm, I may need to go back to previous bitters and try them in different cocktails.
