Ragged Branch Wheated Bourbon

I was under the impression that I love wheated bourbon. I can’t tell you when this idea took root; but if you asked me, I would’ve answered in the affirmative. Wheated bourbon is typically sweeter. I like sweet.

Look: The color is on the lighter spectrum for bourbon. It’s almost the color of honey simple syrup – very light.

Nose: After the alcohol, caramel. Lots of caramel and some sweetness – maple or honey.

Taste: The alcohol continues through the sip. This definitely needs to air out a bit and maybe some water. Without the water, I’m getting caramel and malt flavors. I added a few drops of water and it opened it up significantly. The alcohol taste mellowed considerably and I’m still getting a lot of caramel.

Final thoughts: Meh. I’m not sure I would say I love wheated bourbons based on this pour. BUT, I should add that my palate is jamming on the spiciness of Ryes. So I need to give my ‘meh’ an asterisk and try again when I’m not so in love with Rye.
