Not all bitters are created equally

When I use bitters in my cocktails, all I taste and smell is alcohol and that messes up my drink. ☹ Outside of @Angostura bitters which I like, I’ve tried one other brand. And I didn’t love 3 of the 5-bottle sample pack. Chocolate bitters continue to be hit or miss with me because I experience some cognitive dissonance, chocolate should be sweet, and they are not.

In theory, I should love bitters, they check all of my boxes – they add complexity to one note cocktails and allow me to riff on some of my standards. And they come in a myriad of flavors, which is a +/- for my OCD/hoarding self – I must have complete sets of everything. 😊

I continue to give them a try, knowing that perhaps there is user error – I am heavy handed and maybe add too much. With this thought in mind, I ordered two (see above about OCD/hoarding) samples packs from @Scrappys.

I saw a video, read an article or something about placing a couple of drops on your hand before you ever add them to your cocktail. Doing so allows you to taste the bitters in their own right and also helps you detect the notes when you add them to your cocktail. I tried it. I liked it and will do this from here on out with bitters. Why add them to my bourbon when I don’t like them on their own? Similar to cooking with wine – only add wine to your recipe that you would drink by itself. Brilliant! For comparison, I also tried it with the bitters from my first purchase – had I known about this tip previously, I would have saved myself and my bourbon from many a disaster.

Now that I’m all in with bitters I have decided to make some. Cause you know, I am DIY queen and I know I can do this. Stay tuned.
