Grab Your Hat, It’s Mint Julep Time

A friend of mine used to have the most wonderful Kentucky Derby party every year. We were required to dress for the “Run for the Roses” event and I always looked forward to the first Saturday in May. I could guarantee a few things: there was going to be delicious food to nosh on, I always pick the losing horse, and the Mint Juleps would be plentiful. In fact, I believe my first every Mint Julep was at one of her events and I’ve loved them ever since.

I mean really, what’s not to love – bourbon, crushed ice, a fabulous cup, some sugar and lots of fresh mint. It’s a magical combination. And like clockwork, each year after her party, I vow that I am going to incorporate Mint Juleps into my rotation and I always fall back on my regulars. This year, I made a traditional julep and toasted to the race that didn’t happen and my second one I added blackberries as a garnish – I LOVE blackberries. I saw a number or recipes on blackberry mint juleps that required muddling the blackberries with the mint. Nah, no thank you. The mint is the star of this show, and I want it to remain so. The blackberries are a good counter flavor without stealing the spotlight.

As the years have passed, we no longer dress for Derby Saturday; but we still gather around, wager on the race, eat great food and drink way too many Mint Juleps. Alas, we won’t have that experience this May, but come September, all bets are off… or on, as the case may be. 

Fingers crossed we are living our new normal and no longer sheltering in place.
