Hot Honey Julep

We’re spring breaking with the young prince in Atlanta. After a great day of educational and fun time we stopped at a brewery for some food. To my surprise and delight, they had something interesting, a Hot Honey Julep. As soon as I saw it, I said, yes please!

I feel like hot honey is the flavor profile du jour right now. With hot honey chicken on most menus. I was curious, intrigued, thirsty to try it. It was ok. I like Juleps a lot. Mint, sugar and bourbon is just yummy. Just delicious even. This had local bourbon, mint, honey rather than sugar and cayenne pepper.

I didn’t taste the mint that was listed in the ingredients. I also didn’t love the local bourbon; but the drink has potential. The bourbon was young, 4 years or less and tasted like it. As the ice melted, the drink (cayenne) mellowed. Again, this has potential. As I got to the bottom of my glass, I liked it and started thinking about ways to tweak it and make it better. A few ideas – bigger bourbon to balance the cayenne, honey simple syrup and be generous with it. Have a heavy hand with the mint, I want to see it and taste it. If Julep is in the name, the drink MUST have shaved ice; not cubes, not a block – shaved. I can’t wait to try this at home.

Cheers,
