First Fruit Old Fashioned

An Old Fashioned with stone fruit – yum!

This bourbon old fashioned had apricot liqueur which sounded kind of interesting. I feel like I need to qualify the spirit because I’ve been seeing a lot of Old Fashioneds made with Rye. Who knew that was a thing?! I prefer bourbon in my Old Fashioned.

Along with the apricot liqueur, it had grapefruit bitters and Mattei Cap Corse Blanc, which was new to me.

The first whiff is filled with citrus. In a good way. If I hadn’t read the ingredients on the menu, I wouldn’t have been able to discern what the citrus was; just know that there was a fresh scent to the nose. I didn’t pick up on the apricot; but I was hopeful I would taste it. I do think you could amplify the flavor with an added splash of apricot liqueur. A little research on Mattei Cap Corse Blanc, I found the wine is flavored with a mixture of herbs and spices such as elderflower, quinine and bark, that explains the undefinable citrus on the nose.

This was bitter, I mean really bitter. The combination of the grapefruit bitters and the Mattei Cap Corse Blanc were a lot. Unfortunately, this drink left me and my dinner companion underwhelmed. I couldn’t pick out the apricot liqueur even when I searched for the flavor as I sipped.

I would I was behind the bar, I would tweak this – I’d use ONE dash of grapefruit bitters, a higher proof bourbon, I think this version was maybe 80 proof and I’d add a little simple syrup. I might even skip the bitters and garnish with grapefruit. But… what do I know.

Until the next adventure,

~JMichele
