Chocolate Bitters

I purchased a sample pack of #WoodfordReserveBitters over the holiday season. The bitters are aged in a #WoodfordReserve barrel and are bound to be yummy. Three of the five were sure to be a hit and I wasn’t sure what I’d do with the other two.

  2. Aromatic

  3. Sassafras and Sorghum

  4. Orange

  5. Chocolate

Oh My!

I started with the chocolate flavor. I was both hopeful and reluctant to try this one out of the gate. Hopeful because I LOVE chocolate. Hesitant because of my Old Fashioned with Aztec Chocolate bitters. Nevertheless, I was game to try it.

My first drink was #WoodfordReserve on the rocks with a few dashes of the chocolate bitters. First off, the smell of the bitters is delightful. It smells as chocolate is supposed to. Not bad. Though I think Woodford Reserve really doesn’t need a lot to make me enjoy it, so this felt a bit extra. And I’m not sure if that is extra in a good way. It is wonderful to the nose but I didn’t find it added much to the bourbon. Perhaps I used too much of the bitters – a real possibility. I need to try the bitters in a cocktail…

For my second drink I played the mixologist and made an Old Fashioned cocktail. It was divine (recipe below). The bitters didn’t overwhelm the bourbon. And really, chocolate and bourbon are a great pairing. I would definitely recommend.
