Buffalo Trace Distillery

Day 1: Stop 3

Buffalo Trace Distillery

Buffalo Trace, but my heart says it’s a Bison!

Our final stop was a tasting at Buffalo Trace. At this point, we needed a break and something to eat; but we carry on. It’s our last stop of the day and we purchased the tickets already. We didn’t know it at the time; but tasting and tour are not synonymous. There are some distilleries that give tours without tastings -not sure what that’s all about but anyhoo. Thankfully we only had a tasting because I was NOT up for another tour.

From what I was able to see, the distillery and surrounding grounds were large. The store with Buffalo Trace swag was decent in size and product offering. The tasting however was weird. First of all they mixed alcohol – we served vodka, bourbon cream, rye and bourbon. I don’t mix liquors - that’s a rookie mistake and I know better. So, the vodka, literally remained untouched. I was there for a bourbon tasting. The cream float was made with Buffalo Trace bourbon cream, which I have in my refrigerator, pairing it with root beer was something I hadn’t thought to do. I added it to coffee. The float was good; but again, I’m there for a bourbon tasting and adding cream into the mix could have netted bad results. Very bad. So that tasting literally touched my lips and I moved on. The rye and bourbon were fine. I would have preferred to taste different bourbons with a rye.  The set up for the tasting was also odd. There were several bars in the tasting area, each with its own expert and you stood around the bar for the tasting. It wasn’t terribly comfortable and it certainly didn’t invite you to learn the different undertones of each pour. This was literally taste and go, taste and go. It was also loud in the area, so the expert was often repeating themselves so that everyone at their bar could hear what was being said.

Day One was a smashing success. We learned somethings, took in some great sites and tasted some good bourbon.
