2 Brown Girls & Bourbon

Barrel-Aged Japanese Old Fashioned

My ENTIRE house had the plague that shall not be named. We are vaccinated, boosted and cautious and we still managed to get it. Thankfully because we are all those things, our symptoms were manageable, but the brain fog is real. We have since recovered, still cautious; but I needed to get out and I needed to see people other than my immediate family.

I went to Smashing Grapes with a good friend of mine. Our server was really good, the food was great, and our conversation was excellent. Dare I say it felt almost ‘normal’ or whatever that’s supposed to feel like. Whatever it was, I missed it. A lot.  There are two bourbon cocktails on the menu right now. I was all set to order something other than an Old Fashioned, when our server casually mentioned it was slightly sweeter than the option. Yes, please.

Now for all my bourbon tasting adventures, I am the first to admit that 1) I’m new to bourbon, and what’s new to me, likely won’t be new for seasoned sippers; 2) I may take a few sips neat, but my preference is for cocktails and 3) I prefer bourbon cocktails that are sweet rather than savory – though Thyme Out of Mind proved that statement not 100% accurate. 😉

Back to my Barrel-Aged Old Fashioned – it was very good. I finished my cocktail and I never, ever, do that. But this! Finished it and considered getting a second one. This was sweet, but not overly so. It was well balanced and wasn’t bourbon forward in the mouth. You could taste the bourbon; but it didn’t overpower the other ingredients.

The Barrel Aged Japanese Old Fashioned was perfect.

Until the next adventure,
